Croton Falls, New York was named in 1846, it was previously named Owensville.
 
The New York & Harlem Railroad reached Croton Falls by the year 1847. By 1907 there were two tracks up to Croton Falls.

Today Croton Falls is a bit on the small side, with a platform long enough to accommodate only four train cars. The station area is in the center of the hamlet, surrounded by shops, restaurants, a post office (10519), and the fire department.

The Croton Falls Metro-North station serves the residents of North Salem, New York and surrounding communities via the Harlem Line. It is 47 miles to Grand Central and the average travel time to Grand Central is 1 hour, 16 minutes.

The station, the northernmost on the line in Westchester County, is near the Putnam County line. Putnam runs a shuttle to the station for commuters closer to its location than those of Brewster and Southeast. Interstate 684 is further away from the station than at Purdy's and Golden's Bridge, the next two stations to the south are a short drive away via Hardscrabble Road.

Southbound service to Grand Central Station in Manhattan runs every 15–30 minutes during morning peak hours and approximately every hour during off-peak hours. There is parking at the station and more spaces a short walk away.

North Salem is a town in the northeast part of Westchester County, New York. The population was 5,173 at the 2000 census. The north town line is the border of Putnam County, New York and the east town line is the border of Connecticut.

North Salem total area of 32.9 square miles is home to over 5,173 people, 1,764 households, 1,374 families residing 1,979 housing units. There were 1,764 households out of which 39.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.1% were married couples living together.
